Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal was dealing with a chronic foot injury, because of which the Spaniard spent the latter half of last year on the sidelines. After undergoing surgery, there was a cloud of uncertainty over whether he will make a comeback.

Fast forward to February it is a complete turnaround from the earlier scenario, he has added another Grand Slam to his tally by winning the Australian Open and now is the male player with the most Grand Slam titles. Now the former World No.1 is looking to increase this tally at the French Open, where he will be the favorite to win his 14th Roland Garros title. Novak Djokovic‘s recent revelation that he is stern about his stance on not getting vaccinated and that he is ready to miss tournaments as a consequence further adds to the advantage of Nadal.

In a recent interview with Eurosport, Alex Corretja said that Nadal‘s resurgence in Australia will give the Spaniard the confidence to enter the clay-court season.

After he won in Australia I think Rafa is in the mood, he’s feeling so fresh and so ready to go and enter the clay-court season. He’s someone with a lot of power, a lot of confidence,” he said.

Corretja also added that Nadal will be unfazed by Novak Djokovic’s stance on vaccination, which will affect his participation in tournaments, as Nadal is the dominant player on clay. He also opined that the Serb’s participation will have an effect, but he believes that Nadal and Djokovic will not be bothered by the circumstances on who is competing and who isn’t.

I don’t think he’s going to look at Novak’s position. Because he knows that on clay he’s the toughest guy to beat. Of course, if Novak plays or not, there are consequences. There are consequences in the draw, there are consequences when you enter the tournament. But I think they [Nadal and Djokovic] are so good that they really need to focus on themselves. And then see what the others decide. But neither of them need to look across at the other, or whether Roger [Federer] is back or not,” Corretja further added.

But he expressed his delight that all of them are playing (Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal). There might be situations that are preventing them from playing, in the case of Djokovic, it is restrictions because of vaccinations, whereas for Federer it is injuries.

“The most important thing for tennis is that all of them are playing. But of course, there are some other issues in the world that are impacting the situation. Hopefully, all of them will be playing.”
