“I don’t want to take that risk,” Andy Murray to miss French Open after pulling out of clay season

World No. 87 Andy Murray continues to rise in the ATP rankings having broken into the ATP Top-100 last week, entering into a double-digit ranking for the first time in 45 months. Murray was ranked 95th in the world when he started at the 2022 Rotterdam Open.
The journey however ended in the second round when the Brit was defeated by eventual champion Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 34-year-old then was disappointing both in Qatar and Dubai, losing at the round of 16 stages in both the tournaments to Roberto Bautista Agut and Jannick Sinner respectively.
Andy Murray to skip the 2022 French Open
Andy Murray is set to skip the whole clay season. The Briton is taking a bigger-picture view of the year ahead. Looking for a new coach after a trial period with Jan De Witt ended after Melbourne, Murray is in the Netherlands and again working with Dani Vallverdu. He is available while Stan Wawrinka recovers his fitness but, whoever becomes Murray’s next permanent coach, Roland Garros will not be forming part of their schedule.
The Scot revealed that taking part on clay for the past couple of years have made his injury issues worse. Thus, feeling healthy and happy at this point in time, he has taken the decision to skip the whole clay swing.
“The past couple of years, the clay has made issues worse; last year I had some issues at the beginning of the year, the clay didn’t help, so I’ve spoken to my team about that and this year while I feel good and healthy I don’t want to take that risk.
Andy Murray’s run at the 2022 BNP Paribas Open ended with a second-round defeat at the hands of 31st seed Alexander Bublik on Sunday. The Briton, who recently notched his 700th ATP tour win, could not replicate his first-round comeback efforts, eventually falling 6-7(9), 3-6.
“Both of us had some chances in the tie-break, but in the first set I certainly created more of the opportunities and I didn’t take them. He obviously came up with some good serves at times, but I certainly had my chances and against players that play that style of tennis and have obviously big serves and are not easy to break, you need to be ruthless when you get your chances and I just didn’t quite play well enough in those moments today,” said Murray after the match.
