Federer reveals potential return date after further assessment
As fans and tennis lovers impatiently wait for Roger Federer’s return to action following the long-term injury, the Swiss has now somewhat spilt water on their hopes. Federer said on Saturday that any tournament comeback from his knee surgery last year will not be until at least the late summer.
The 40-year-old tennis great gave an update on his lengthy rehabilitation to Swiss broadcaster SRF when he attended a women’s World Cup ski race at Lenzerheide, where he has a home. It confirmed Federer’s comments in November that he would not return in time for Wimbledon, Federer’s favorite tournament, in June.
Federer told SRF that his rehabilitation was progressing well enough that he was now thinking in terms of playing again. Previously, he said the motivation for undergoing surgery in August was to protect his future quality of life with his family rather than a return to competitive tennis. The 40-year-old will look to hit the courts again as soon as possible after a lengthy time off on the sidelines.
“You can see I can move normally again. I still have to wait a bit to run. I hope I can increase that more and more over the next few months and I hope I can make a comeback in the middle or at the end of the year. I had a really good MRI a few weeks ago, which I’m really happy about,” said Federer.
