Swiss tennis star Belinda Bencic has revealed she has been diagnosed with a lung condition and is experiencing lingering effects after her battle with Covid last year. Bencic revealed this during a press conference following her second-round win over Kaja Juvan at the St. Petersburg Open.
” I have been diagnosed with something in my lungs that is not normal. I can play, but it will take me time to get back to the physical condition I had before being infected. And still, I’m happy I can play but it’s going to take me a while to recover—they said about two, three months,” she said.
Bencic was one of the several players that tested positive for Covid-19 after she played at an exhibition match in Dubai in December last year and the 24-year-old revealed that she experienced quite “severe symptoms” when she contracted Covid. The condition she was diagnosed with is a lingering after-effect of the virus.
“It’s also what happened, in Australia” Belinda Bencic reveals the reason for her poor showing at the Australian Open
The Swiss star also said she is not able to play tennis at the top level yet and it might take 2-3 months for her to get back to full fitness. She also added that this was the reason she was not able to perform well at the Australian Open, but she is slowly working to get back in shape for the upcoming tournaments.
“It’s also what happened, in Australia. I kind of expected I will maybe not have the best chance to win a lot of matches, but I’m trying my best to get back to shape.”
This news comes as another setback for Bencic who was recently on an upward trajectory after struggling with multiple injuries over the years. Bencic was a breakout star when she made her senior debut in 2014, she managed to reach the quarters of the US Open on her debut, aged just 17. The Swiss star was already drawing parallels with her fellow countryman and Swiss tennis legend Martina Hingis.
But Bencic couldn’t match the heights of her debut season as she was plagued with multiple injuries. After a brief hiatus in 2020, Bencic found her rhythm back in 2021 when she returned to the top-10 of the WTA ranking and was also crowned the Olympic champion at the Tokyo Olympics. After having a breakthrough year, such worrying news comes as another jolt out of the blue for Bencic.
