‘I just want the same for the younger girls to pick up the sport,’ Leylah Fernandez shares a strong message to young fans after a heroic outing at the Billie Jean King Cup

The 19-year-old Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez won against Daraja Semenistaja of Latvia in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifoers. The qualifier match was over in amere 53 minutes. Semenistaja couldn’t cope with Fernandez’s pace. The match was so quick, that Fernandez completely destroyed her opponent with a score of 6-1,6-2.
After the match, in the interview, Fernandez said she was very happy to be there. Playing in front of a home crowd is something very special for her. Hearing the cheers helped her a lot to calm down and have fun on the court. She always want to start strong and fast and was glad her balls went in. She also added that she was very happy she could execute her game plan.
“I am very, very happy to be here. To play in front of a home crowd is something very special for me. Just to hear your cheers, has helped me a lot to calm my nerves and just have fun on the court. She also said that tennis gave her many opportunities and positivity. She just wants young girls to play tennis in a positive environment.
“Tennis has brought so much to me. So much positivity, so many great opportunities. I just want the same for the younger girls to pick up the sport, pick up a tennis racket, have fun and just have that positive environment around them,” she said. This was her answer when she was asked about being vocal and giving it back to the next generation of Canadian girls. She’s a true inspiration to the young girls. Any girl who saw her match would have been inspired by her.
Fernandez’s next match is against Vismane of Latvia in the Billie Jean King Cup. Canada just needs one more win to book their place in the finals for the second straight year. The game is going to be worth watching as Vismane is the Latvian number 1.
