“Hope to emulate him”- Alejandro Davidovich Fokina draws inspiration from his idol Rafael Nadal
Davidovich Fokina and Rafa Nadal
The Monte-Carlo Masters 2022 takes place in picturesque Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France. Rafael Nadal has won the Monte Carlo Masters title 11 times. His dominance on claycourts is unthinkable. He has also won 13 Roland Garros, the highest number of single grand slams any player has ever won. Nadal’s records are both a source of awe and inspiration for the players.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the talented young Spaniard also hopes to imitate Nadal’s successes in Monte-Carlo. He has had to battle Djokovic in the round of 32, and he came on top. He defeated David Goffin and even Taylor Fritz, in the quarterfinals. Davidovich Fokina is into the semifinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022, his best-ever performance in Monaco.
Nadal: An inspiration for the young Spaniard
It has been a tremendous week for Davidovich Fokina as he is looking to make Monte-Carlo his first ATP Masters 1000 Finals. Alejandro is currently ranked number 46 in the world but his play here is better than some of the top 10 players. He would love to win the Monte-Carlo Masters and start on the path of imitating Rafa’s successes in Monte-Carlo. Rafael Nadal is one of the most influential players on the planet and it’s not a surprise that the young players draw inspiration from him and set their targets to perform like him.
“Last year, I managed to reach the quarter-finals but there was no audience. It was so sad. This year I had my first match on center court with an audience in the stands. So the feeling has nothing to do with 2021. Anyway, I feel different playing here compared to other tournaments. It’s a tournament I’ve always loved. I remember Nadal’s successes here perfectly, I hope I can emulate him,” Fokina said after beating Fritz.
Although 11 titles is a pretty tall order, you have got to start somewhere and the time is looking favorable for Alejandro. He would love to make the most of it and collect his first title in Monte-Carlo. He would be amply challenged in the semifinals by Grigor Dimitrov and if he reaches the finals Zverev or Tsitsipas would be another David vs Goliath story for Davidovich Fokina, but fortunately, he has achieved such a feat in the round of 32. And if does play in the finals, he would look to invoke his inner Nadal for the title.
Whatever be the result, Davidovich Fokina has performed exceptionally in Monte-Carlo and would take great joy in his run here, but he would surely love to get a title. After all, It is never good for such a talented player to miss out on the title.
