Ashleigh Barty clinched the Australian Open 2022 Women’s Singles title, as she defeated Danielle Collins in straight sets in the finals. This means that the Australian claimed the title with out even dropping a single set throughout the tournament. The world number one defeated Collins by a score-line of 6-3, 7-6 in the final.
After she claimed the championship point, Ash Barty let out a huge scream which is a very unusual celebration from her end. The Australian is generally a very calm and composed personality, but she must have felt a huge burden being lifted off her shoulders, after claiming the title.
“Yeah, it was a little bit surreal. I think I didn’t quite know what to do or what to feel, and I think just being able to let out a little bit of emotion, which is a little bit unusual for me,” Barty said.
Ashleigh Barty went on to say that it was an incredible feeling to celebrate her success with the home crowd. The world number one opined that all things came together at Australian Open, which culminated in this very special moment.
“I think being able to understand how much work my team and I have done behind the scenes and over the last few years, to get to this point to be able to have this opportunity was really special. It just kind of all came out at once, and yeah, a really, really special moment,” said Barty.
‘I can’t believe Craig Tiley kept it a secret,’ Ash Barty on the special appearance from tennis legend, Evonne Goolagong
During the trophy presentation, there was a special guest who was invited to do the honors. It was none other than Australian tennis legend and 14-time major champion, Evonne Goolagong. Evonne Goolagong won four successive Australian Open titles from 1974 to 1977, three of them came without dropping a set.
You could see the happiness and the surprise on Barty’s face when Evonne’s name was called out in the Arena. The world number one stated that she had no clue that the tennis legend would be presenting the title, and could not believe the fact that Tennis Australia CEO, Craig Tiley kept it a secret.
“I thought she wasn’t coming, and I’d spoken to her earlier in the week, and she was staying at home and not being able to travel down this year. So to have that surprise was amazing. I can’t believe Craig kept it a secret,” said Barty.
