“I think it was the right choice” Jannik Sinner reacts to Nick Kyrgios’ fight with the chair umpire at the Miami Masters 2022

Jannik Sinner and Nick Kyrgios
Italian young gun Jannik Sinner continues his run at the Miami Masters 2022 having reached the finals last year. The youngster has taken down big names already in the tournament and the latest one to bite the dust against him was Nick Kyrgios. Sinner won the match 7-6(3), 6-3 to advance into the quarter-finals of the Masters-1000 tournament.
While it was the first meeting between the two players with Nick being a huge fan of Jannik’s gameplay, the match will be remembered for a long time for reasons not related to the tennis that was played but the fight that broke out between the chair umpire and Kyrgios towards the end of the first set.
The fight escalated quickly with Nick first receiving a point penalty for ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’ and with continued altercations during the set break, Nick was given a game penalty and Sinner was asked to serve to start the second set. Nick was visibly furious and went on to berate the chair umpire who received boos from the crowd as well during the match. Nick did not shake hands with the umpire after the match and after congratulating Sinner at the net, he started arguing with the umpire once again.
Despite this, Sinner remained quiet and continued to channel his energy toward the match. “What I understood, the court there is a little bit different than the centre court. He usually played on the centre court, which he said it was a little bit slower. The rest, I didn’t understand. I mean, I just tried to stay in my zone, and, yeah, I think that was the right choice,” said Sinner during the press conference after his win.
Jannik Sinner happy to overcome Nick Kyrgios, faces a tricky quarter-final test

With Nick being in some great form this month, it was going to be a difficult match for Sinner and he was prepared for it. Nick could have posed more challenges had he not been distracted by his fight with the chair umpire but it does not take credit away from the Italian for his performance against the Australian who was the oldest player left in the tournament in the 4th round.
“It is tough, of course, but I think I have done a great job today because usually, you don’t play many matches like this, so you have to be in the present moment, as I said, and I think I have done a great job about that. Also, I knew before the match that I had to raise the level a little bit, because, you know, he’s the kind of player who pushes a lot of the ball.
“When he’s serving well, also his return gets better. I tried to stay there at every point, which I have done, so I think it was a positive match,” said Sinner about his performance. Jannik will now take on surprise quarter-finalist Francisco Cerundolo who defeated Frances Tiafoe in the 4th round and is a completely unknown quantity.
