“I’d like to get to 800” A proud Andy Murray locks his next target

Andy Murray
World No. 88 Andy Murray became the 4th active player to win 700 Tour matches when he defeated Taro Daniel in the first round of the 2022 Indian Wells Masters. Murray despite dropping the first set went on to win the match 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the milestone with only the Big-3 ahead of him in terms of wins. The next best is Richard Gasquet with 566 wins to his name.
Murray needed 1 hour and 58 minutes to beat the Japanese player who met him for the third time this season. After Daniel won the first set, it looked like an uphill task for Murray to win as Taro wrapped up the first set with only 7 games played. The Brit however showed his class yet again as he battled his way into the match to pick up the win and move ahead.
“When you look at the players who have reached this ‘performance’, most of them are the best of the last 30 or 40 years. Being in this group is very pleasant. I’ve seen tennis players who have between 700 and 800 wins, and there are some amazing champions I watched growing up. I’d like to get to 800 now.
“When you see a number like that and can compare yourself to some of these guys, you’re extremely proud of your achievement and all the matches you’ve won, especially in unbelievably difficult times,” said Murray after his win over Daniel that now puts him into the second round of the Masters event where he is still looking for his first title having finished as the runner-up in 2009.
Alexander Bublik awaits Andy Murray in 2nd round

Stopping Murray from his 701st win will be Alexander Bublik in the second round. This will be the third meeting between Murray and Bublik who earlier met in the first round of the 2022 Rotterdam Open with Murray winning the match in straight-sets having earlier won their 1st round meeting in 2017 Wimbledon as well. Bublik had a bye in the first round and will start his campaign directly against Murray.
