My dream is to face Serena Williams someday, says Iga Swiatek

Serena Williams and Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek is one of the form players on the WTA tour. She shot to fame after winning the French Open title in 2020. In the process, she became the first female player from Poland to win a Grand Slam title. The Warsaw girl also became the youngest French Open winner since 1992. She also joined a list of tennis greats- Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and Chris Evert to have won Roland Garros before they turned 20.
The 19-year-old finished 2020 as World No.19, and is currently ranked 9 on the WTA charts. She even won a title in Rome last week, and is one of the favourites to win the French Open for a second time.

After her triumph in Italy last week, Swiatek spoke to one of her sponsors- Xiaomi about breaking into the top-10 of the women’s rankings.
“Since last year’s success in Paris, my goal is to stabilize my form. I would like to be in the top ten or five of the WTA ranking not for a moment, but for many years. For that to happen, it must be the result of good and repetitive performances. I will try to go in this direction,” Swiatek said.
Although the Polish girl is an ardent Rafael Nadal fan, she wants to face 23-time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams on the tour.
“There are more female players that I appreciate and respect. However, my dream is to face Serena Williams. It has not yet been given to me. She’s a legend, you don’t need to argue that. I would like that, regardless of the outcome and the course of the meeting. To just have that experience as a tennis player.”
Swiatek doesn’t believe in over-the-top celebrations

The Italian Open champion also opened up on how she likes to celebrate victories in her own, private and measured manner.
“I don’t have much time for this. Tennis is a sport in which you are about to start once again. I don’t specialize in celebrating. I’m more of an introvert and then I like to just sit back and think about everything. Spend this time in a small group of people. It definitely helps me.”
“I celebrated my success in Rome with my favorite dessert, which is tiramisu. So it wasn’t a big deal. As an athlete after the last successful starts, I feel satisfied, and as a person happy,” Swiatek concluded.
