World No. 9 Iga Swiatek has finally announced her new coach after the 20-year old had earlier announced that she was splitting with coach Piotr Sierzputowski who had been training for the past 6 years. Swiatek made the announcement before she begins her season in Australia where she will start at the WTA-500 Adelaide International where she is the defending champion.

Iga announced the decision in interaction with WTA Insider as she now looks forward to a new season and a start of a new partnership with her new coach Tomasz Witkorowski, the former coach of World No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska. Tomasz’s stint with Radwanska saw her become of the bests on the Tour and led her to all of her best Grand Slam finishes in both singles and doubles events.

“For a week I really had my doubts. I realized that I’ve been working with Piotr for five years or even more. A lot happened since we started. I felt it’s a good time for a next step and a change to maybe, like, reset a little bit. I also didn’t have experience of changing a coach, so I didn’t know how the process looks like.

“But I’m pretty happy that Tomasz was free at the moment because, yeah, I also feel like I wanted to work with someone who’s from Poland because I think I’m going to be ready for, like, coaches from different countries in maybe one or two years, but now I wanted to work with someone who understands my situation and we can speak the same language so it’s a little bit easier,” said Iga announcing the partnership.

Given both of them are Polish and the track record of Tomasz in helping Radwanska who many call as one the unluckiest players to miss out on a Grand Slam given her success on Tour, the 2020 French Open champion is excited for the new season with Tomasz.

“I think it’s a great decision for me. Right now we’re getting to know each other because we practised in Poland for three weeks, so it’s not a lot. For sure in tournaments, it’s a little bit different because we have different factors coming in and stress and stuff.

“I think next few tournaments I’m just going to use for getting to know each other. We’re talking a lot about tennis, even off-court stuff. I feel like I just need some time to build that relationship. We’re going to see how it’s going to go,” added Iga further.

Iga will start in Adelaide as she looks for a successful stint Down Under and aims for her 2nd career Grand Slam title when she takes the court at Melbourne Park for the 2022 Australian Open after having made it to the 2nd week in the 2021 edition as well.
