Three-time Grand Slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka to return to the tour this year, opening with the Roland Garros. Wawrinka has revealed that he will make a comeback at the French Open 2022. Since losing in the first round to Lloyd Harris in Doha last year, the 36-year-old Swiss tennis star hasn’t played in almost a year.

The former World No. 3 was sidelined by a foot injury and had two surgeries on his left foot, the first shortly after the Doha match and the second in June last year.

The operations follow two left knee surgeries in August 2017, which resulted in yet another lengthy sabbatical. Wawrinka, on the other hand, is undeterred by this and remains optimistic about returning to the tour.

During an interview with the newspaper Le Parisien, Wawrinka revealed that he plans to play in the French Open, which he won in 2015. Since 2005, he is the only player beyond the Big Three to win the tournament.

He said that he’s going to stick to the basics of the game and will constantly remind himself that he’s playing to have fun. He added that many treat tennis as a job which in reality, is not.

“People often ask me why I’m trying to come back after my injury and carry on, but it’s because I’m passionate about tennis, I love the spectators,” he said. “When I walk out on court, I make sure I remember that it’s a game. The whole basis of tennis is that we tell children to “go and play”! A lot of people forget that when they turn professional: they see tennis as a job. What motivates me the most is reminding myself that I’m going to play, have fun!” he said.

The French Open 2022 starts on May 16th, and the Swiss will require a wildcard entry to compete.
