“I’m hyped up for a comeback”- Serena Williams to make her long-awaited return at Wimbledon?

Serena Williams

Serena Williams has finally given an update about her comeback plans. The American hasn’t played a match in 8 months and speculations had been rife about her retirement. These rumors were further fuelled when her coach Patrick Mouratoglou joined hands with Simona Halep, to become her full-time coach, sparking rumors of Serena’s imminent retirement. But Serena has quickly cleared the air around the rumors and has announced she will be making a comeback at Wimbledon in June, exactly one year since she last played on tour- which was coincidentally at the same Slam.

The former World No.1 was at a Bitcoin conference with NFL stars Odell Beckham Jr. and Aaron Rodgers in Miami. After the event, Serena posted an Instagram story with Rodgers, in which she confirmed her long-awaited comeback plans. This also means she will be resuming her bid for the elusive 24th Grand Slam title.

“I’m backstage at Bitcoin conference in Miami with Aaron Rodgers and we’ve been talking about my comeback and he’s been hyping me up, getting me ready for Wimbledon. So can’t wait,” Serena remarked.

This announcement left Rodgers bemused as well, saying “Then what about US Open“. Serena let out a chuckle saying she’ll be competing at Wimbledon first which left Rodgers hyped up saying “She’s back.”

Serena hasn’t played a match since her first-round match in Wimbledon last year, where she was forced to retire mid-match with a leg injury after she twisted her ankle during the first set. As a result of this, she plummeted down the rankings and is out of the top-200, she is currently ranked No.246 in the latest WTA rankings. With the Wimbledon beginning in late June, the former World No.1 has ample time to gear up for a comeback during the grass-court season.

Serena is currently in the second spot on the list for most Grand Slam Single titles (23), one behind Margaret Court. That one title has eluded the American for a long time, she hasn’t won a Major in the last 5 years. Although she reached four finals since winning her 23rd title at the Australian Open in 2017, she couldn’t cross the final hurdle in all of them. With a final comeback bid, Williams will be hoping to take one more shot at a record-breaking 24th Grand Slam title and bow out as the Greatest of All-time.
