Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are all set to reunite again on court when they play doubles together for Team Europe at the Laver Cup this year. The Laver Cup began in 2017 and was inspired by Ryder Cup in golf, where Team Europe and Team World face off. Six top players from Europe will play against six top players from the rest of the countries in nine singles matches and three doubles matches. Roger Federer was one of the founding members of the Laver Cup.

Long-time friends and rivals, Nadal and Federer will be teaming up in doubles for the second time, five years after their first outing together. They will be looking to preserve Team Europe’s unbeaten streak in the tournament when they take to the court in September for the tournament’s fifth edition.

Federer is yet to play a match since his quarter-final exit at Wimbledon last year. The Swiss maestro revealed he would confirm his return to tour around April-May. Meanwhile, Nadal is celebrating his 21st Grand Slam title after he won the Australian Open last week.

Swedish tennis great Bjorn Borg, who will be the captain of Team Europe, will be aiming to continue his team’s dominance. Team Europe has won the tournament every year since the inaugural edition began in 2017. Borg also gave his thoughts about Federer and Nadal returning to the tournament, after both of them couldn’t play last year due to injuries. “It doesn’t get much better than being able to select Rafa and Roger for the Laver Cup in London,” said Borg.

The former World No.1 also spoke about Nadal’s historic Australian Open win last week and hailed the importance of the two tennis greats as not only players but also role models.

What Rafa just achieved at the Australian Open last weekend was incredible. He embodies the spirit of our game and we are so lucky to have him and Roger as role models for our sport. Two great champions, one incredible city and an iconic venue – it is going to be truly momentous. We first saw in Prague the excitement and buzz created by Roger and Rafa playing doubles together. Then, in Geneva, just having them side by side, coaching each other and cheering their teammates on from the player bench gave everyone a view into what makes them special.”
