18-year old Carlos Alcaraz won his maiden Masters 1000 tournament at the Miami open 2022 on Sunday. The Spaniard became the youngest man to win the Miami Open after his victory over world no. 8 Casper Ruud 7-5,6-4 in the men’s singles final.

“I have no words to describe how I feel right now,” Alcaraz stated after the one-hour, 52-minute match. “It’s so special to win my first Masters 1000 here in Miami. I have an unbelievable team with me and my family… I’m so happy with the win and my team.”

After his first ATP 500 title in Rio de Janeiro in February, the Spanish teenager had reached the semifinals of the previous masters 1000, where he lost to the 35-year-old, world no 4 Nadal at Indian wells. However, the young Spanish player has fought back and has carried himself into the Miami open and has claimed a glamorous victory over the 23-year-old champion Ruud in the men’s singles final.

The young player dedicated his semi-final win to his coach Ferrero, who appeared unexpectedly in time for the final, for which he was courtside at the hard rock stadium.

Alcaraz, who is also a big-time Real Madrid fan, got well-deserved recognition from the club. The legendary Spanish club congratulated Alcaraz for becoming the first-ever Spaniard to win the Miami Open.

“Well done, @alcarazcarlos03. It makes us proud that a great Madridista like you has won the Masters 1000 Miami in such brilliant fashion, becoming the first Spaniard and the youngest tennis player in history to do so. Congratulations!”

After having a slow start in the opening three games of the match, Alcaraz took control by conquering eight of nine games. Though Ruud had a good opening, the 18-year-old had put up sustained pressure on Ruud’s serve by putting his opposition player with deep returns.

Being the youngest winner in the history of the tournament, the world no 8 is the first Spanish man to earn the title succeeding eight previous appearances in the finals, including Nadal.
