With the 2022 Davis Cup qualifier ties set to be played in the coming week, Team Australia will be without Nick Kyrgios, champion at the 2022 Australian Open in Men’s Doubles. Kyrgios has been a controversial figure in the Australian team for his antics and a different ideology from the team.

However, with the success in Melbourne Park this year, many were hoping that Nick will return to sport the Australian team jersey for the Davis Cup qualifiers. However, he has chosen not to play as he continues to remain absent from the Tour that has seen his ranking drop outside the Top-100 as he is currently ranked 134th in singles and 42nd in doubles.

“He had a meeting in America, so it made it pretty tough. We wanted him back for this match, so it’s disappointing that he wasn’t available for this particular tie But he’s in the top five players in our team. I get along extremely well with Nick and we have plenty of open discussions he loves playing, but he’s got a lot of other things going on at the same time as well.

Hopefully, he gets the opportunity to be back in the team because he really enjoys being around the boys and I actually think it helps his tennis and his enjoyment of the sport as well. At times, it can break up a really long year, tennis is a pretty individual sport throughout the 12 months travelling, so hopefully, we get through this match and he’s available later in the year,” said Australian Davis Cup team Captain and former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt as reported by Tennisuptodate.

Nick Kyrgios has not played apart from the Australian Open

Kyrgios was unfortunate to contact the Covid-19 virus and was forced to miss the start of the season. He made his season debut directly at the 2022 Australian Open. After defeating Liam Broady in straight-sets in the first round, Kyrgios was up against the then World No. 2 and the top-seed of the tournament, Daniil Medvedev. In an entertaining match, Medvedev won in 4-sets not without some glorious rallies and shots by Nick.

He then shifted his focus completely to the doubles event partnering with childhood friend Thanasi Kokkinakis as the two friends went on to claim their career’s first Grand Slam title in front of a packed crowd every time they played being the crowd favourites. It’s been a month since they captured the title but Nick has not returned to the Tour yet and has not hinted when he will be returning again. He had been absent similarly last year playing directly at Wimbledon after the Australian Open.
