Roger Federer suffered another knee injury last year, which kept him out of the rest of the season. Instead of hanging up his racquet, the tennis legend decided to go for a third knee injury and give it yet another shot.

Roger Federer last featured in action at Wimbledon last year, where he was defeated in the quarterfinals by Hubert Hurkacz. Tennis legend, John McEnroe hopes to see the Swiss maestro back fit until Wimbledon 2022 takes centre stage again.

However, Federer had earlier stated that it is unlikely that he will be back on tour till Wimbledon, which means he could aim for a comeback during the American hard court season. McEnroe said that any event where a player like Federer does not play, he is an absolute miss.

John McEnroe stated that Roger Federer is certainly the best player he has ever seen, and he would love to see him back on tour.

It goes without saying that anytime we are at an event where Roger is not playing we miss him. He is the classiest player and the most beautiful player I have seen on a court. As a fan I would love to see Roger around,” said McEnroe.

As far as the future, he’s 40 years old. He’s had numerous surgeries on his knee, there’s a lot of wear and tear, it would be unbelievable if he could come back and get close to the level that he was at,” he added.

I don’t want to see Roger Federer at 80 per cent: John McEnroe

Roger Federer returned from a six month injury in 2017, when he clinched the Australian Open in the most amazing manner. Hence, John McEnroe suggests that one should never write off Federer, and it would be incredible to see him lift his ninth Wimbledon title.

“I thought the same thing five years ago when I was coaching [Milos] Raonic and Roger walked off after the Wimbledon semi-finals [in 2016] and was limping and didn’t play for six months. Then he won the Australian Open. He’s pulled off the improbable before but this would be the most amazing of all if he was to win another Wimbledon,” said the American.

John McEnroe wants Roger Federer to do whatever makes him happy, whether its playing on tour or hanging up his racquet. However, if Federer does decide to compete he wants a 100% fit Federer and not at his 80%.

Whatever makes him happy is what he deserves. If he wants to play we will be happy he is playing but I don’t want to see Roger at 80 per cent. We have seen that with [Andy] Murray and it’s not easy. You want to see the top guys play at their best,” McEnroe continued.
