However, the 24-year-old had a somewhat resurgent year, clinching 2 titles and thus making a comeback into the top 30 of the world rankings. The Russian started her year two consecutive semis at Melbourne and Sydney, following it up with a round of 32 exit against Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open 2022.

In a recent interview with Eurosport, Daria Kasatkina spoke about a range of topics such as the Australian Open final, Rafa  Nadal’s comeback and Russian cinema. One of the biggest topics she spoke about was that of Novak Djokovic and his treatment at the Australian Open.

When asked if Djokovic being not allowed to play at the tournament was fair, the former World No.30 said that had the Serbian played, it would have affected the mood of the players competing negatively due to an exception being made. She added that since Djokovic wanted his own way, it was good that the rules laid out by the tournament had been followed. She also added that after all the events that proceeded Djokovic’s arrival in Australia, it was a good thing for the other players that he didn’t play.

“I will say this: it would be unpleasant for the players if Djokovic was allowed to play. Because we all made some kind of sacrifice: we accepted the rules of the game in order to play. Novak wanted to go his own way. If he was allowed to play with all the set of absurdities that eventually turned out, it would not be fair to the players..”– said Kasatkina.

In another section of the interview, she also observed that though Djokovic tries to be good and make himself loved, he fails in that everytime for some reason.

“There is such a person – Djokovic. We all see how he wants people to love him. How he tries to do everything for this, but it does not work.”– were her words.
