“It’s hard to be on court,” Ukrainian tennis star Dayana Yastremska set to compete at the Lyon Open, just days after fleeing her war-torn country

Ukraine is currently under an invasion from their neighboring country, Russia. This has forced many civilians to flee from the war-torn country and take refuge elsewhere. Ukrainian tennis star Dayana Yastremska was also among the innocent civilians who had to bear the brunt of the invasion and fled to other countries. Yastremska and her sister spent an agonizing two days in an underground shelter before they flew to France.
She penned down an emotional note to express gratitude to her parents. Russia has attacked Ukraine on all fronts, meaning all the land, air, and water transport will be affected in the coming days. Yastremska’s parents then took a selfless decision to send Dayana and her sister to safety in France, while they themselves remain in Ukraine.
Yastremska to compete at the Lyon Open
Just days after fleeing Ukraine and undergoing such a tough ordeal, Dayana Yastremska will compete at the WTA 250 tournament in Lyon. She is in the main draw of both the singles and women’s doubles matches. She will take on Ana Bogdan in her opening round match on March 1st. In the doubles, she will team up with her sister, Ivanna, and will face Garcia Perez/ Knoll in the first round.
This comes off as an incredibly courageous stand from the 21-year-old who was in the midst of an invasion just a couple of days back. Dayana took to Twitter to share photos on the practice courts in Lyon and expressed her concerns for her family, who are still in Ukraine.
“It’s hard to be on the court when all thoughts about Ukraine, and family,” she posted.
Elina Svitolina also stated that she will compete at tournaments and will donate her prize money for military aid and relief efforts in her country.
“I decided that the prize money from my upcoming tournaments here in Mexico and in the States will go to the Ukrainian Army and to humanitarian needs. So like this, I can help my country. And this, I think is the right thing to do at the moment. And I want to do something and to help my country,” she said in an interview with Eurosport.
