With a performance, not many expected, Rafael Nadal once again proved that he is not yet done. Coming from a long injury haul, Nadal’s chances at the 2022 Australian Open were very slim and given his track record of having won only 1 title in Melbourne Park in 5 final appearances, not many could see Nadal winning his 21st Grand Slam in Australia.

The Spaniard however silenced all of his critics by lifting the trophy after a marathon final of 5 hours and 24 minutes, which also became the second-longest Grand Slam final and co-incidentally, Nadal was part of both of it. Having lost the longest Grand Slam finals against Novak Djokovic in the 2012 Australian Open, Nadal came out victorious this year against World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev to win his 21st major and 2nd at the Australian Open having won his first way back in 2009.

In what has been an emotional roller coaster for the entire Nadal camp, coach Carlos Moya in a recent interview with Spanish radio Onda Cero talked about the chances of Nadal winning more Grand Slam titles as he is now the man with the most number of Grand Slam titles won leading close rivals Djokovic and Roger Federer who are tied on the second place with 20 Slams each.

“I believe Nadal will win more Majors. Our big goal is the French Open. We have to make sure Rafa gets there in the best possible way. He is one of the favourites to win the title in every tournament he plays. I think it’s not the last Grand Slam I’m going to see him win. I’m very aware of who Rafa is and what he’s done in the history of tennis,” said Moya.

“With Rafael Nadal, I never give up anything”: Carlos Moya

With the next slam being the 2022 French Open, Nadal will be the favourite given his fantastic record of having won 13 titles and suffered only 3 losses from the 108 matches he has played, having a 97% winning rate at the Slam.

“It’s very difficult for another to win, but it’s Rafa Nadal I won’t get tired of saying it. He is one of the favourite players for every tournament he can play. With Rafa Nadal I never give up anything, nor do I think that we are going to a tournament and he has no chance of winning. There were many things that made you see that it was going to be difficult.

“But the player who was with us was Rafa Nadal, and you can’t give up anything. One always has the hope that being with Rafa everything can happen. Rafa’s great objective this year is Roland Garros. If he is healthy he is one of the favourites, but there are several months to go with many events in between,” added Moya about his ward’s chances at future tournaments.
