World No. 1 Novak Djokovic was finally allowed to enter Australia after the courtroom of Judge Kelly announced the verdict in the Serbian’s favour and dismissed the Australian government’s ‘unreasonable’ case ordering an immediate release of the player from the federal quarantine hotel where he was detained since his arrival in Australia.
However, with the court now ruling in his favour, Djokovic is now free to participate in the upcoming 2022 Australian Open where he will now be the 3-time defending champion and enter the Melbourne Park on the lookout for his 10th Australian Open title and 21st career Grand Slam title.
Speaking about the entire episode, 3-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 Andy Murray gave his opinions on the Djokovic situation and talked about how the focus now needs to shift towards the Grand Slam and the Tour events that are happening as the controversy overshadowed the tournaments that were being played during the past few days.
“It’s positive that he’s not in detention anymore. Obviously, he won in court, so, you know, that’s a positive thing for him. Hopefully will be able to concentrate on the tennis now. “I think there are still a few questions that need to be answered around the isolation and stuff, which I’m sure we’ll hear from him in the next few days, but yeah, I mean, I’m obviously here to try and play and win tournaments,” said Murray after his first-round win in the ATP Sydney Tennis Classic.
Novak Djokovic seeded 1st for the Slam, Murray enters through wildcard
With the 2022 Australian Open set to begin from Monday, 17th January, the seeds for the Grand Slam were recently announced where, as expected, Novak has been seeded first on the men’s side while Ash Barty will be the top-seed on the women’s side.
Murray on the other hand receives a wildcard into the main-draw of the Grand Slam given his current ranking of World No. 135 that does not have him qualified for the Slam automatically. Murray being former World No. 1 and 5-time runner-up at the Australian Open gets the wildcard without any eyebrows raised.
