World No. 1 Novak Djokovic‘s participation at the upcoming 2022 Australian Open was a huge drama that went on for nearly 2 months before the final decision was taken by both the player and the tournament. Djokovic took to his Instagram handle to confirm that he will be indeed making the trip ‘Down Under’ for the Australian leg of the series.

With the tournament officials and the state government making it clear no unvaccinated player, staff member or spectator will be allowed entry in the stadiums, a while later, a medical committee was formed that could exempt certain individuals given their justification on why they have not been vaccinated.

Djokovic’s participation was confirmed after he was given the exemption by the medical committee that now allows him to play. The decision was met with backlash from many because certain players have not been allowed to play at the Slam. Also given Djokovic’s record at the Slam that includes 9 Slams and him being currently the 3-time defending champion, many people have raised eyebrows over his participation.

“I think if it was me that wasn’t vaccinated I wouldn’t be getting an exemption and that’s… You know, but well done to him for getting clear to come to Australia and compete,” said 2016 Australian Open doubles champion Jamie Murray as reported by Eurosport.
