Sofia Kenin vs Maria Sakkari: Preview

Sofia Kenin

The Russian-born-American, Sofia Kenin, has had a rather bumpy start to her tournament. Having already come through 2 grueling matches in the first and third rounds against Jelena Ostapenko and Jessica Pegula respectively, she will definitely look to reduce her court time and wrap up and quick victory against the Greek, Maria Sakkari.

However, things don’t pan out the way it is planned in sports! And Maria Sakkari is out to cause an upset when she takes on one of the tournament’s favourites in Sofia Kenin. She certainly proved her tenacity in the previous round when she came out victorious in a hard fought match against the higher seeded Belgian, Elise Mertens.

Both Kenin and Sakkari have endured a sketchy season in the lead up to Roland Garros, with neither getting past the round of 16 in the recently concluded clay court tournaments.

The pair have met thrice before, twice in 2018 and once at the start of this year. Two of these meetings have been on a hard court while the other was on grass. Kenin leads the head-to-head battle 2-1, but it is worth noting that Sakkari won their most recent encounter in 3 sets at the Dubai Open.

Going by their current form, both players have raised their game on Grand Slam week. Sakkari proved her grit when she came back from a disappointing second set tie-break loss to Mertens to win the final set comfortably.

Kenin, on the other hand, is battle-tested and has proved her mettle at a very young age. She is a fighter who would love to emulate, if not better, her run at Roland Garros last year when she finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek.

Truth be told, this is a hard one to predict. Both players have the skill and heart to get the better of the other on their day. It sure has the earmarks to make for a thrilling three set match.

Prediction: Sofia Kenin to win in 3 sets.
