Kerber had a tough nut to crack in the opening round of the 2021 BNB Paribas Open as she was forced to play a three-set clash against Katerina Siniakova before she could finally manage the victory. The German had a bumpy start to the season as she was crashing out of almost every single tournament that she participated in. She flipped the tide around after winning the Bad Homburg Open that ended her three-year draught of silverware and also managed to cruise to the semis of Wimbledon.

Darina Kasatkina progressed to the third round after Astra Sharma pulled off halfway from the game, quoting fatigue and injury concerns. The Russian had a stellar outing in 2018 where she bagged the tenth position in the WTA rankings. However, things went downhill for her ever since and she could barely find her footing in the following years. This year brought her back to the extremes as she managed to bag two titles and reach two finals with a record of 35-17.

However, Kerber is a deep defender and doesn’t really break under pressure.

The three-time Grand Slam winner uses her patience to frustrate opponents and as soon as they are jaded, she forces them into making errors. With a menacing down-the-line forehand, once she has comfortably settled in her defensive cocoon, she starts whipping out those nasty belters.
