Keys was last seen on the tour at the Silicon Valley Classic where she was seeded number 3. However, she lost in her first match, the round of 16, against Zhang Shuai in straight sets, 5-7, 6-7 (5-7). Keys last played in Canada in 2019 where despite being seeded number 14, she lost in the round of 64 against Donna Vekic in a close three set match, 6-3, 6-7, 6-7. Keys is seeded number 16 in Canada this year and will be looking to win her first title of 2021.

Rebecca Marino reached a career high ranking of 38 in July 2011 and despite turning pro in 2008, Marino is yet to win a WTA Tour title. Marino was last seen on the tour at the Thoreau Tennis Open last week where she was defeated in the round of 32 by Magdalena Frech in straight sets, 3-6, 6-7 (4-7). The Canadian last played in her country in 2018 where she failed to make it into the main draw. In the first qualifying match, she stunned number 13 seed, Vera Lapko 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. However, in the next round, she was not able to overcome number 5 seed, Wang Qiang who beat her 7-5, 6-4 and thus, Marino did not qualify for the main draw.
