Novak Djokovic continues to hold his spot at no.1 for a record-breaking 417th week in the ATP rankings. Djokovic currently has a significant lead with 9,725 points even with his Indian Wells defeat which came as a shocker to the tennis world. Having pulled out of Miami Open citing personal reasons, the Serb will now be missed by his fans for a good few weeks before he makes a comeback at the Monte Carlo Masters.
The battle for second place is much tighter, with only 495 points separating Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner has the chance to overtake Alcaraz in the rankings if he performs better at Miami given that Alcaraz will be oozing confidence after his dominant title defence at Indian Wells.
Sinner’s chances at gaining on Alcaraz who now stands with 8805 points seem bleak given how Alcaraz seems to be on a hot winning trail given his back-to-back wins at the Netflix Slam and now at the Indian Wells. That being said, Monte Carlo will bring a fair chance for the top three to be on the same page and Sinner could realize his dream of a career-high ranking of world no. 2.
Jannik Sinner did not break into the top three for the first time after his Australian Open win, but rather after winning the title in Rotterdam where he had replaced Daniil Medvedev who moved down a spot to no. 4. Medvedev once again lost to Alcaraz in a rematch of last year’s Indian Wells but managed to retain his spot just a step ahead of Alexander Zverev who is now ranked at no. 5.
Andrey Rublev dropped to no. 6 while Casper Ruud, who had broken into top 10 after Acapulco now came up to no. 8 with only Holger Rune separating them. Hubert Hurkacz moved down to number 9 as rising Aussie ATP icon Alex de Minaur stands at the 10th spot. Unfortunately, once again no American ATP players are making it to the top 10 this week, and the dry run continues with Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, and others vying for a chance in Miami.
“Lucky Loser” Luca Nardi breaks into top 100 following massive win over Novak Djokovic at Indian Wells
Having ousted Novak Djokovic in an intense face-off during the third round at Indian Wells, Luca Nardi has shot up 27 places since his previous ranking. He now ranks at no. 96 which is a career-high stat for the young Italian.
