At the start of the 2021 US Open, World No.2 Daniil Medvedev made a statement. He said, “We’re not here to let (Djokovic) win the US Open,” and staying true to his word, he pulled off a daunting task by beating World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the finals to win his maiden Grand Slam.

Not only did the Russian stop the Serb from winning a rare, Calendar Slam, but he completely ambushed the three-time US Open winner in straight sets.

As plenty of heart-warming messages were being circulated for the losing finalist, a few congratulatory ones too were doing the rounds on social media. 11-time Grand Slam champion and two-time Calendar Slam winner, who was watching live action unfold at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, wasted little time in wishing the Russian.

“Simply stunning Daniil Medvedev, you stopped one of the greatest tonight. To win your first Grand Slam title is always special, to do it against a champion like Novak Djokovic is something else. Take heart Novak, the quest continues. Best wishes, (rocket symbol),” the Australian tweeted.

Similarly, legendary Bille Jean King too joined the bandwagon and extended her wishes to the new US Open champion.

“Congratulations to @DaniilMedwed the 2021 #USOpen Men’s Singles Champion. Credit to Medvedev who played spectacularly. As @rodlaver would say, you can’t have one bad match in a major, & Novak made too many unforced errors today. However, winning 3 of 4 Slams is remarkable,” the American wrote.

Interestingly, as most tennis fans were aware, the winning occasion also marked Medvedev’s third wedding anniversary. The 25-year-old’s wife, Daria Medvedev, who was in his box was in for a surprise from her champion husband.

“It’s a certain anniversary for me and my wife today. During the tournament, I couldn’t think of a present or anything so when I went into the final after the semis win, I thought ‘okay, if I lose, I will have to find a present fast. When I won (the first set), the only thing I thought was ‘wow, if I lose I will have no time to find a present and so, I have to win this match,” the second seed added some humor to his post-match presentation talk.
