Davis Cup

The Davis Cup is one of the most prestigious tournaments in men’s tennis where nations across the globe come together to win the tournament. The tournament is often called the ‘World Cup of Tennis’ and was founded in 1900 by American politician and tennis lover Dwight F. Davis.

It follows a combination of round-robin and knockout format and the winning team is called the world champion. The USA is the most successful country at the competition having won the title 32 times from the 61 finals they have played since the tournament’s inception.

The Davis Cup allowed only amateurs and national registered professional players to compete until 1973, five years after the start of the Open Era in 1968, a decision that allowed amateurs to play with the professionals. The defending champion for the 2021 edition is Spain having won the 2019 title, their 6th overall title in the competition. No tournament was held in 2020 due to the Pandemic.
