All the events in Tennis at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics came to an end on 1st August with the best tennis athletes being crowned as an Olympic Champion and an Olympic medalist. There have been highs and lows for all the athletes who participated in the Games, but some were able to make their dream come true this past weekend.
Men’s Singles Event
In the gold medal match, number 4 seed of the tournament, Alexander Zverev from Germany faced number 12 seed, Karen Khachanov from Russia. Zverev dominated on the court throughout the match and played his best tennis ever. After 79 minutes, Zverev took the win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 and was titled the Olympic Champion and will be taking the gold medal home, while Khachanov won the silver.
The bronze medal match was played between number 1 seed, Novak Djokovic from Serbia and number 6 seed, Pablo Carreno Busta. After an almost three-hour marathon, Busta upset the world number 1 by taking the last medal up for grabs by winning in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.
Women’s Singles Event
In the women’s singles event, Belinda Bencic from Switzerland who is seeded number 9, triumphed over Marketa Vondrousova from Czech in 2 hours 30 minutes to take the gold medal in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.
While, number 4 seed, Elina Svitolina from Ukraine bagged the bronze medal by beating number 15 seed, Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan in a three-set match, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. The match was extremely close with Svitolina winning 111 points and Rybakina winning 105.
Men’s Doubles Event
In the finals of the men’s doubles event it was Croatia vs Croatia. The number 1 seed duo, Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic just edged out Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig. With a difference of just 2 points at the end of the match, Mektic and Pavic took the win in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.
In the bronze medal match, New Zealand’s, Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus defeated America’s Austin Krajicek and Tennys Sandgren in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, to add another medal to their own and New Zealand’s name.
Women’s Doubles Event
Number 1 seed, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova from Czech took the better off Switzerland’s, Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, to be crowned Olympic Champions.
Another close match saw Brazil’s Laura Pigossi and Luisa Stefani closely edge out Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina in the bronze medal match. The Brazil duo took the win in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
Mixed Doubles Event
It was Russia vs Russia in the finals of the Mixed Doubles Event. Number 4 seed, Andrey Rublev and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova outlasted Aslan Karatsev and Elena Vesnina in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 13-11 to take the gold medal.
Australia’s Ashleigh Barty and John Peers were awarded the bronze medal after Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic gave them a walkover because Djokovic suffered a left shoulder injury during his singles bronze medal match.
