World No.2 Daniil Medvedev made history by winning the recently concluded 2021 US Open champion. In the process of winning his maiden Grand Slam, the Russian also stopped the World No.1 Novak Djokovic from achieving the Calendar Slam.

After two previous failed attempts in the Grand Slam finals, Medvedev finally crossed the final hurdle to conquer the championship in New York. Although he didn’t impress at the French Open and Wimbledon, the 25-year-old ensured that he would become only the second Russian after Marat Safin to win a Major title since 2005.

Medvedev’s stunning win also earned him rich praise from Russian President, Vladimir Putin, ”On the path to the final of this prestigious competition, you demonstrated the highest class of skill and perseverance in reaching your aims and in the deciding match you performed in a confident and collected manner, not leaving a chance to a strong and renowned opponent,” Putin wrote. “That is how real champions play!”

It was also very unique to see the newly crowned US Open champion celebrate his win over Djokovic. After the final point, Medvedev just fell on the court, towards his left, which later went onto make headlines.

Recently, a young kid aped the Russian’s celebration, which has got the Twitter world excited. Medvedev too acknowledged the young Lucie’s funny move.

Medvedev to play Indian Wells

Last week, Medvedev was seen playing the 2021 Laver Cup in Boston, where he played an instrumental role in helping Team Europe beat Team World. The top-ranked Russian even opined that he is hungry for more wins and titles going forward.

Medvedev will be seen at the upcoming ATP Masters event in Indian Wells, where he will be aiming to win his maiden title in the desert. With the absence of Djokovic, Medvedev will also be the top seed in California.
