Alexander Zverev made a return to the tennis courts after not facing any major repercussions from his recent rage-fulled tirade at the Mexican Open.
Zverev defeated Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil at the Davis Cup World Group Qualifiers yesterday. The German appeared relatively calm on his return and dispatched Seyboth Wild 6-4, 6-2 to give Germany a 1-0 lead over Brazil. This was his first match since being kicked out of the Mexican Open for violent conduct against the chair umpire.
During his doubles match in Acapulco with Marcelo Melo against Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara, Zverev was visibly frustrated with a call made by the line umpire and lashed out at the chair umpire in an expletive-laden rant for not overruling the call. Zverev didn’t end his tantrums there itself, after the match ended he hit the chair umpire’s stand with his racquet. For his violent behavior, the German was suspended from the tournament and fined $40,000, and had to forfeit $30,000 prize money and his ranking points.
The World No.3 is also currently being investigated over domestic abuse allegations by his ex-girlfriend Olya Sharypova. Zverev’s current girlfriend Sophia Thomella sided with him despite all the controversies and furor around the Olympic champion. . She was delighted about his return and thrilled by his performance at the Davis Cup. She took to Instagram to post a shot of Zverev and captioned it “Maschine”, referring that his performance is comparable to a machine.
Zverev earlier expressed his displeasure over the new format of the Davis Cup and said he would never feature in it. But he made a surprise U-turn and decided to play for Germany, just a few days after his disqualification in Acapulco.
Alexander Zverev in the main draw of Indian Wells
As of now, no further sanction has been imposed on Zverev and if the situation remains the same he will be allowed to compete at the Indian Wells, which begins next week
Zverev’s sanctions were criticized by numerous pundits and tennis players as this was seen as a rather soft penalty for Zverev’s conduct. Serena Williams even called out double standards over the sanctions Zverev was handed. Williams was handed two-year probation and fined $175,000 for ‘aggravated behavior’ during her 2009 US Open semi-final against Kim Clijsters. Mats Wilander and Patrick McEnroe called for a ban to be imposed on the German.
