‘Many close matches in future’ Iga Swiatek thanks Leylah Fernandez after a close battle in Adelaide
Iga Swiatek and Leylah Fernandez
The defending champion at the WTA Adelaide International 2022, Iga Swiatek continues her fine form as she overpowers 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez in their Round of 16 clash. The title defence is going good as the Pole is yet to drop a set in the two matches she has played so far and has looked in great control.
Swiatek beat Fernandez 6-1 6-2 in 1 hour and 14 minutes as she won the match without conceding a single break opportunity to the Canadian. Of the 103 points that were contested by Swiatek and Fernandez, the Pole won 66 of them while Leylah could manage only 37 as she now exits the tournament from the 2nd round and will have to wait till the next week to return to action.
Iga took to her Twitter handle after her victory to thank Leylah for a good match which the scoreline might suggest a drubbing but Leylah was fantastic making Iga work hard for her victory. Iga wrote, “I’m sure we will have many close matches in the future @leylahfernandez Thank you for today. #respect,” as she retweeted the match point posted by the WTA handle.
Iga Swiatek to now take on Victoria Azarenka
In the quarter-final clash now, Iga will be taking on former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka who is also yet to drop a set this week so far in Adelaide. The Belarusian started her season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Paula Badosa in a revenge win for the 2021 Indian Wells finals and then defeated local girl Priscilla Hon 6-3, 7-5 to move into the quarter-finals.
This will be the second meeting between Swiatek and Azarenka having met earlier in the 3rd round of the 2020 US Open where Azarenka won in straight-sets on her way to the runner-up finish at the Slam where she lost to Naomi Osaka in the finals in a 3-set battle with the Japanese superstar.
Swiatek and Azarenka will battle for the semi-final spot on the 7th of January with Azarenka also scheduled to play in the semis where she is partnering Badosa.
