Martina Navratilova suggests an ‘asterisk’ to be placed next to Lia Thomas’s name: Here’s why
Martina Navratilova comments about Lia Thomas
On March 17, Former World No. 1 and 18-time grand slam champion Martina Navratilova made a comment on one of the most controversial American athletes, Lia Thomas, saying that one has to add an ‘Asterisk’ next to the transwoman’s name.
Lia Thomas has been the heart of multiple top discussions involving her unfair advantage in all the Swimming tournaments in the Women’s category. The American Swimmer has attracted the attention of many since 2021, and this year she was mentioned in ‘The Washington Post’ for “Shattering records.”
“An Open Category” proposes Matina Navratilova for the current situation
The 65-year old former tennis player has always been extremely vocal about her opinion regarding any and all issues surrounding athletes. After the 22-year old Lia Thomas’s win in the Women’s 500-yard NCCA Championship, not just Navratilova but many other fellow swimmers and athletes spoke out their thought on the win, claiming it to not be fair for the biological women.
Martina Navratilova began her thoughts by saying, “It’s not about excluding transgender women from winning ever.” She continued, “Her feelings are similar to the USA Swimming Official Cynthia Millen, who claimed in 2021 December that letting transgender females swim against biological females, in a way defeats the point of the competing being fair in the first place.”
“But right now, the rules are what they are. Maybe put an asterisk there, if she starts breaking records left and right,” said the tennis legend in response to Lia Thomas’s recent achievement in the National Collegiate Athletic Association championships in Georgia.
Lia Thomas’s thoughts on the future
The transgender swimmer has gone through many challenging moments in her life, which she had to overcome to reach this point in her life. This is why she says, “I just want to show trans kids and younger trans athletes that they’re not alone, They don’t have to choose between who they are and the sport they love.”
Prior to her win, Thomas said, “I don’t know exactly what the future of my swimming will look like after this year, but I would love to continue doing it. I want to swim and compete as who I am.”
