‘Match of the season?’ Alexander Zverev survives Jannik Sinner scare to reach the semifinals at Monte-Carlo, inches closer to No.1 ranking
Alexander Zverev
Amidst all controversies, Alexander Zverev continued his good run at Monte-Carlo going after he survived Jannik Sinner test in the quarterfinal. He defeated the Italian in three tight sets 5-7,6-3,7-6(5) to reach his first Masters semifinal of the season. This will also be Zverev’s second semifinal in the Principality.
The German was struggling with form coming into Monte-Carlo but managed to notch up a couple of solid victories to boost his confidence. Against Sinner, he was on the back foot right from the start but responded well. He matched Sinner from the baseline but a late break from the Italian was enough for him to win the opening set 7-5.
But Zverev looked a far better player in the second set. He served with a lot of topspin and pushed Sinner to create angles for winners. The Italian too was hitting a lot of unforced errors which ultimately cost him a break. Zverev took his chances and capitalized on the break to win the second set 6-3.
The third set was probably the set of the tournament. Both Sinner and Zverev were on song on serve and held it to perfection. They also indulged in long rallies and fast baseline exchanges which was majorly dominated by Zverev. After two poor service games, the set went into the tie-breaker where the German needed only one match point to wrap up the match.
