‘Tennis may not be ready for life post the Big-3’, feels Marion Bartoli
Former Wimbledon winner, Marion Bartoli feels the tennis circuit won’t be able to handle the exit of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, after the Big-3 decide to call it quits.
In the recent chat with tennis journalist, Ben Rothenberg, the Frenchwoman stated that tennis will see fans and footfalls dropping after the retirement of the three legends.
“Not yet at all, and the numbers are showing it,” Bartoli replied when asked whether men’s tennis was ready for life after the Big 3). “The final of the Miami Open this year between Sinner and Hurkacz lost 72% of the viewers on the ratings on the TV compared to the 2019 final between Roger and John Isner. So that’s just showing in itself that (the sport is not ready for life post Big 3).”
Who remembers the Miami Open 2021 champion questions Bartoli
“And probably if you go out into the streets and ask who won the Miami Open, even in Miami, I don’t think a lot of people would be able to answer that question unless you are a tennis fanatic and you know what’s exactly going on,” Bartoli added.
This debate about the possible void the Big-3 might leave on the ATP tour has been doing the rounds lately. However, on the talent front, the next generation seems to be doing fine. But it remains to be seen if the viewership and the fandom dwindles in as we go ahead in time.
