The 25-year-old Russian will be looking to put behind him a disappointing Wimbledon, in which he lost to Hubert Hurcakz in the Round of 16. It was a thrilling match which ended 2-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. He did, however win a tournament very recently, the Mallorca Open which was held just 3 days before his first round match. The world number 2 brushed off American Sam Querrey in straights sets to win the title.
24-year-old Alexander also comes into the clash having lost a tournament he was one of the favourites for. Seeded number 1 at the Hall of Fame Open, he fell in the Semi Final to South African Kevin Anderson in a 3 setter.

The pair have faced off twice, with Daniil coming off victorious in both the meetings. Their most recent meeting came at the 2021 French Open, where the Russian won his first Roland Garros match, brushing aside Bublik in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5.

Medvedev will be making his Games debut and is will be looking to make a potential run to the final but will have to get through a draw half consisting of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Pablo Carreno Busta in a comparatively easier side of the draw. The Kazakh international will also be playing his first match at the Olympics. Medvedev enters the match as heavy favourite to win and face either of Indian Sumit Nagal or Denis Istomin in the second round.
