Daniil Medvedev vs Tommy Paul: Preview
World No.2 Daniil Medvedev registered his first-ever main draw victory at Roland Garros beating Kazakh Alexander Bublik in straight sets 6-3,6-3,7-5. Despite being the second seed, Medvedev entered his match against Bublik as the underdog in the eyes of many because of his poor run on Clay. The Russian, surprisingly wasn’t making a lot of errors and totally blew the unorthodox Bublik by his forehand.
As for his opponent, Tommy Paul survived a titanic tussle against Australian Christopher O’Connell and emerged with a 6-2,6-4,4-6, 4-6,10-8 win in three hours and 33 minutes. The American was expected to win easily in the opening round but a dozen of unforced errors in the third set shifted the momentum towards the Australian. But eventually, he came through in five sets to set up a second round match against the No.2 seed.
Daniil Medvedev vs Tommy Paul: Head-to-Head
This will be the first ever meeting between the duo. The two haven’t met yet and hence the H2H stands deadlock at 0-0.
Daniil Medvedev vs Tommy Paul: Prediction
On paper, Daniil Medvedev goes in as the favorite to win the match but in reality, he is always vulnerable on Clay. But he has shown promise in the opening round with his massive forehands. He would want to keep the pace of the match with powerful groundstrokes and quick rallies against Paul.
For Paul, holding his serve will be the key and much will depend on how his legs feel after a 5-set marathon in the opener. Expect a tricky match, with Paul troubling Medvedev but the No.2 seed eventually marching ahead at the 2021 Roland Garros.
Prediction: Medvedev to win in four sets.
