Without a doubt, Daniil Medvedev is the frontrunner of the young generation. Since the second half of last season, he has been absolutely phenomenal and has aged well. He started the year with a runner-up finish at the Australian Open and improved as a player on clay and grass. He then won the Toronto Masters and followed it up by winning his maiden grand slam at Flushing Meadows.

This week in Turin, he has won three very tight matches. He defeated Hubert Hurkacz and Alexander Zverev in the first two matches before beating Jannik Sinner in a three set thriller.

Casper Ruud has had a breakout 2021 season. He is tied with Zverev and Djokovic for winning the most titles this season-5. He was termed as just a clay courter when he won three consecutive titles on the dirt- the Swedish Open, the Swiss Open and the Austrian Open. But he proved his mettle on hard courts and had a couple of quarterfinal outings at Toronto and Cincinnati. He then won the San Diego Open before a couple of quarterfinal outings at Vienna and Bercy.

At the ATP Finals this week, he lost his opening match to Novak Djokovic before back to back victories against Cameron Norrie and Andrey Rublev– both in three sets.

This will be the third meeting between the duo. Medvedev leads the H2H 2-0. They last met at Mallorca earlier this year where Medvedev won in straight sets.

Medvedev will start the favorite to win the match. He has been the best player on hard courts this season and the fast courts of Turin bode well with his game. He has an unorthodox style of play which could prove to be too much for a defensive player like Ruud. The only thing that will go against the Russian is that he has won all his previous three matches by the barest of margins. And hence Ruud will want to exploit his backhand and take the match as deep as possible. Having said that, except a tight match with Medvedev making it to the final.

Prediction: Medvedev to win in three sets.
