Elise Mertens vs Zarina Diyas: Preview
The Belgian kicked off her season with a title in Melbourne early in the year. Later, she also carried her form onto the European clay swing by making the finals of Istanbul, before she was stopped by Garbine Muguruza. Continuing his impressive run on the dirt, Mertens did make the third round in Madrid. Unfortunately, injury prevented the 25-year-old from progressing ahead. She then lost a close three-setter to Veronika Kudermetova in the very first round in Rome, before coming into the French Open. She easily beat Storm Sanders in the opening round in Paris and given her clay court proficiency, she can be a dangerous floater in the women’s draw going ahead. She will also be aiming to get past the fourth round in Paris, which she has never done in the past.
On the other hand, the Kazak player has not struggled on clay this season. She has not been able to get past the second round in any of the tournaments she participated in. However, she will take heart from the fact that she was successful in beating Heather Watson in straight sets in the first round at this year’s French Open. With only three wins in seven matches on the dirt, it would be surprise if she gets past the second round against a tougher opponent.
Elise Mertens vs Zarina Diyas: Head to Head
These two have met only once on the tour, with the Belgian winning the clash.
Elise Mertens vs Zarina Diyas: Prediction
Mertens has played quite a few matches, and against tougher opponents too which will help her progress ahead in this year’s French Open. Moreover, her consistent shot-making from the baseline will cause problems for her relatively inexperienced opponent. A straightforward win should be the order for this match.
Match Prediction: Elise Mertens should win in two sets.
