The twenty five year old Belgium, Elise Mertens, is an excellent Doubles player, but in the last 2-3 seasons, her Singles game has come along nicely as well. She has six WTA Titles so far. Mertens started the season by winning the Gippsland Trophy. On the clay courts this season, she reached the Finals of the Istanbul Cup, and then the Quarter-finals of the Madrid Open as well. At Madrid she beat Simona Halep in the round of sixteen.
In the Quarters though she withdrew with an injury while trailing Aryna Sabalenka. In the Italian Open she lost to Veronika Kudermetova in the very first round. Her first round opponent here is Australian Storm Sanders.
Sanders is predominantly a doubles player, but at twenty-six time is running out for her in the Singles game. This year, storm has participated in a mix of both WTA and ITF events. On clay, she qualified for the Charleston Open, and was beaten by Petra Kvitova in the round of Thirty-two. She played and won three rounds of qualifiers to qualify for the main draw.
