Alexander Zverev came to the Miami Open as the second seed and will be aiming to win the ATP 1000 title to improve his underwhelming start this year. He failed to get three wins at the ATP Cup, lost to Denis Shapolvalov in the fourth round of the Australian Open and even lost the finals of the Open sud de France against Alexander Bublik. 

Then he was forced to withdraw his name from the Mexico Open after his unsportsmanlike conduct as he repeatedly struck his racquet on the umpire’s chair after some disagreement during his Double’s game. But he redeemed himself a little bit as he represented Germany in the Davis Cup and help his country reach the finals with a win over Brazil.

So Miami Open is the redemption arc of Zverev’s topsy turvy campaign this year. He has already defeated Borna Coric, Mackenzie McDonald and Thanasi Kokkinakis to reach the last eight. Apart from the match against Coric, which went to the third set Zverev has not had to break a sweat in the tournament.

Similarly his opponent Casper Ruud has not had the best start to the year as he missed the Australian Open due to an ankle injury. But the 23-year-old returned with a bang by winning the Argentina Open where he defeated local boy Diego Schwartzmann. 

Ruud was also a part of Norway’s Davis Cup team as they took on Kazakhstan. While Ruud defeated Mikhail Kukushkin, he lost to Alexander Bublik and Norway lost the entire encounter against Kazakhstan and won’t be going to the ATP Finals. Ruud was eliminated in the third round at the Indian Wells after losing Nick Kyrgios and is keen to deliver at the Miami Open

Before this encounter, Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud have faced each other two times and Zverev has a 2-0 advantage in the head to head statistics. The German defeated Ruud 6-1, 6-3 at the Cincinnati Masters last year and also got the better of him in Paris Masters beating the 23-year-old 7-5, 6-4.

There is hardly any margin of error for Alexander Zverev who will enter this match as the favourite against Ruud who can really end up giving a tough fight. But Zverev’s exceptional movement and powerful shots make him the player to watch out for. 

The Norwegian however will hope that Zverev loses his cool somehow and force out errors from the German as he keeps up his consistency with the groundstrokes. 

But overall it will be difficult to rattle someone like Zverev who has looked in good shape against Kokkinakis and will look to continue that at the Miami Open.
