After a bye in the First Round and a walkover victory in the Previous Round over Ilya Ivashka, second seeded Monfils is in the quarter-finals of the Sofia Open, without having stepped on the Court. As the highest ranked French player on tour, even at the age of 35, the pressure on Monfils continues to rise as he heads closer to the final matches of the tournament.

He has recently been the subject of criticism from French media, after early exits from the French Open, Wimbledon and Olympics, however, he has clapped back with improved performances, reaching the quarterfinals in Toronto and the third round in the US Open.
