Tennis at Tokyo Olympics: Naomi Osaka storms into the third round, ousts Viktorija Golubic

Naomi Osaka

4-time grand slam champion and home favorite Naomi Osaka continued her amazing run at the Tokyo Olympics by beating Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland. The Japanese beat Golubic in straight sets 6-3,6-2 in the second round of the competition.

Osaka is making her Olympic debut and is one of the hot favorites to win the Olympic Gold on her home soil. She has had a tough couple of months off the court because of the press conference controversy surrounding her and the 23-year old is playing her first tournament since the French Open, where she withdrew after her first round match, and hence a good run at the Ariake Tennis Park should give her a lot of confidence.

Naomi started the match on a very positive note. She looked very confident on serve and was setting up the rallies for a clean winner. She targeted Golubic’s backhand initially and hence got the decisive break soon. She went on to win the set comfortably 6-3.

Osaka carried momentum and gave the Swiss no chance in the second set. She took a break early on and capitalized it with a hold of serve. She was hitting winners left, right and centre, and made marginal very few unforced errors. Her flawless gameplay gave her another break and she stormed away with the second set 6-2.

With this form, it looks like Naomi Osaka will not settle for anything less than the gold. She will either face Marketa Vondrousova or Mihaela Buzarnescu in the third round.
