“10 days full of excitement and madness” Roland Garros confirms to host the tennis events of the 2024 Paris Olympics
Paris Olympics tennis events to be held at Roland Garros
Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam event of the year which is a clay tournament, is all set to host all the tennis matches of the 2024 Paris Olympics. As earlier it was announced, Paris is the host nation for all the events for Olympics 2024, but there was no official confirmation regarding the place where the tennis events will be held even though it was obvious of the fact that it would have been at the Roland Garros.
Tennis became a part of the Olympics games in the year 1988 and since then, all tennis events at Barcelona 1992, Seoul 1988, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020 have been played on the hard court. This will be the first time the tennis matches will be played on the clay court and the other exception was in London 2012 when it was played on the grass court.
Roland Garros will host the Olympics for the very first time
This is the first time any club will be hosting an Olympic event since the London Olympics in 2012 where all the tennis events were held at the All England Club. Roland Garros is the place where we have seen Rafael Nadal claim his 14 singles Grand Slam titles and is the ‘undisputed king’ on clay.
The home of the French Open will host the Olympic tennis games for a span of ten days that will be held from 24 July 2024 to 4 August 2024. The tournament will feature men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and also the mixed doubles categories. It is an event where every player aims to become the champion and waits for a span of four years to defend their title. Andy Murray is the only player to have won two singles gold medals and also the only player to have defended his Olympics title.
At the Roland Garros, the tennis challenges will take place at the court Philippe-Chatrier, whilst the court Suzanne-Lenglen will be home to volley and boxing challenges. Roland-Garros stadium has been already extended since its inauguration, and now features 17 clay courts and covers 11 hectares. Among the latest arrangements made to date, there is the inclusion of the Simonne-Mathieu court and its 5,000 seats in the garden of the Auteuil greenhouse. The famous court Philippe-Chatrier has a seating capacity of 15,000 and now enjoys a retractable roof that can open or close within 15 minutes.
