World No. 4 Rafael Nadal‘s problems with his foot continue to trouble him. Upon winning the 2022 French Open, his 14th title in 18 years which was also his 22nd career Grand Slam title, the player had to undergo surgery immediately afterwards. After winning the title, he revealed that ever since his second-round win, he was taking injections to numb his foot and the pain in order to continue playing painlessly during his matches.

Upon returning to Spain after a successful fortnight in Paris, the Spaniard reached Barcelona for a radio frequency surgery that has left him on crutches for a small while. The surgery is being looked at as the solution to keep him injury-free for the rest of the season and allow him to compete on the Tour regularly with half of the season still to be played.

Francisco Roig, a former Pro and part of Nadal’s coaching team since 2005 has seen the Spaniard lift almost every single Grand Slam title of his career. Post the surgery, the 54-year old coach talked about the procedure and how will it help the Spaniard stay fit for the second half of the season.

“Rafa’s problems worsen with the cold. But the doctor hopes the new pain relief treatment will work. We will have to wait. I think it’s 2 or 3 sessions and Rafa will be delighted, so will we. He will live painlessly for a while. We were locked up for a while and not exercising goes against him. Since then he has had more problems. He can’t train, have to train for 20 minutes and quit,” said Roig as per Spanish media outlet Noticias.

With Nadal having won both the Grand Slams of the season so far, he has a chance to make it a hattrick of titles at the 2022 Wimbledon if he is able to play. Answering whether the 2-time Wimbledon champion will make the trip to London, Roig said, “It’s the million-dollar question and hopefully, it will last many more seasons, but age is age.”
