Dominic Thiem
Dominic Thiem fought hard in the Round of 16 clash as he defeated Marcos Giron of America 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the quarter-final of the 2022 Gijon Open in two hours and 27 minutes of play. It was his fourth appearance in the quarter-finals of the ATP tournaments of the year.
Thiem opened up about his performance during the post-match interview where he stated that it wasn’t an easy win for the Austrian and had to keep fighting to save each crucial point during the course of the match. He felt contended and called himself lucky to end up as the winner in the thrilling and exciting match where both players played a good level of tennis.
He said that “It was a very intense match. Long, long rallies and lots of running. It was so close throughout the whole match until the third set. At the end of the second set, anything could have happened. I had to save a break point at 4-4 in the second set, if he makes it he is probably going to be the winner. It was so close to the match, but luckily I was able to win that second set and then run away at the beginning of the third. I am really happy. It was so close, so intense. A great night.”

Dominic Thiem is yet to win a title since his triumph at US Open in 2020
Thiem defeated Joao Sousa of Portugal in the first round of the Gijon Open in straight sets. He had been eliminated in the first round of the US Open and also had skipped playing at Wimbledon citing recovery reasons. He was looked upon as one of the breakout stars who would be able to mettle his dominance for quite a time but his injuries and delayed recoveries made it difficult for being consistent on the Tour.
Dominic Thiem claimed his maiden Grand Slam singles title in the finals of the US Open in the year 2020 defeating beating Alexander Zverev despite being two sets down. He had been out of action for most of the time in the second half of 2021 due to his wrist injury that happened at the Mallorca Open in 2021. Since his title win in 2020, he is yet to win a singles title and is hopeful to getting back on winning ways.
Thiem will play against Francisco Cerundolo in the quarter-finals of the Gijon Open as he is in search of his first title win of the year.
