‘A little respect?’ Carlos Moya slams Patrick Mouratoglou for not putting Rafael Nadal as one of the favorites to win the French Open

Rafael Nadal and the French Open is one of the biggest stories in all sports. The Spaniard, who is the ‘King of Clay’, has won the title 13 times, has won over 100 matches at Stade Roland Garros, and has lost just 3 matches in his entire career. Defeating Nadal at the French Open is considered to be one of the toughest things to do in tennis and to date, only 2 players have done it.
Needless to say, despite any circumstance, Nadal walks in as the favorite to win the French Open every time he plays it. But renowned coach Patrick Mouratoglou thinks otherwise. Rafa had an incredible start to the 2022 season where he won 3 back-to-back titles and made it to the final of the Indian Wells Masters. But Nadal was ruled out for the next 4 weeks due to a hairline rib fracture which meant that he’d miss the start of the clay season.
Mouratoglou believes that Nadal won’t be in his best form arriving at Roland Garros because he won’t have enough matches under the belt as a tune-up.
“He will not play many games and it is very rare that he arrives at Roland-Garros with so few games. So, this tournament will be a bit unknown to him. Despite his incredible start to the season, Rafa has always been a player who needed to play a lot. He is not going to arrive in his best form,” Mouratoglou said.
Carlos Moya reminds Patrick Mouratoglou of Rafa’s achievements
But Nadal’s coach, Carlos Moya was quick to respond to Mouratoglou and listed down Rafa’s achievements. He reminded Mouratoglou that Nadal has been in the top 10 for 17 years straight, won the 2020 French Open having played just 3 matches before in 7 months, and won the Australian Open this year having played just 3 matches in the last 6 months.
“17 years in a row top 10, Roland Garros’20 with 3 matches in 7 months, Australian Open’22 with 3 matches in 6 months… a little respect and memory @pmouratoglou,” Moya tweeted.
It is believed that Mouratoglou isn’t the biggest Rafa fan and often takes a dig at him. So it was fitting for Moya to respond on behalf of his pupil/
