Agent Tony Godsick confirms Roger Federer’s plans to come back at the Laver Cup amidst rumors of withdrawal

It’s been a long time since Roger Federer last stepped onto the court to play a tennis match. He last played the quarterfinals at Wimbledon 2021 and after losing that, decided to undergo a third knee surgery which ruled him out for almost a year. It took him around 3-4 months to come out of crutches and walk normally and another couple of months to start light training.

He started training indoors in March earlier this year and later announced that he won’t be able to get fit in time for Wimbledon. To give clarity, he decided to come back to the Laver Cup and also entered the Swiss Indoors in Basel. He began light outdoor training a couple of weeks ago and was seen hitting on the tennis court.

A couple of days ago, there were rumors that Federer’s recovery and rehab aren’t going according to plan and as a result, he has been advised to miss the Laver Cup. This came as a shock to many as fans were eagerly waiting for the 20-time major champion to return to action after a year’s hiatus.

But now, Federer’s agent, Tony Godsick has confirmed that while Federer’s recovery isn’t going 100% according to plan, he is trying his level best to return to professional tennis at the Laver Cup. But reportedly, his knee isn’t holding up as expected and hence his performance may severely be hampered. “Roger is doing fitness and playing tennis. He’s trying to prepare for the Laver Cup,” Godsick told Blick.

Federer has confirmed that after the Laver Cup, he will play the Swiss Indoors on home soil in Basel. As he is still in the early stages of coming back, Federer will finish his season at Basel and could then play a full summer swing in Australia if his body allows. Given his age, the 2023 season could very well be his last season on the professional tour.
