‘A**holes from Down Under!’ Fans call out Australian Open’s hypocrisy for congratulating Novak Djokovic on 1000 career wins

Novak Djokovic

World No.1 Novak Djokovic became only the 5th man in tennis history to win 1000 tour-level matches. This was after his semifinal victory at the 2022 Rome Masters against Casper Ruud. This is so far the highlight of Djokovic’s 2022 season as the Serb was forced to miss the majority of the season due to his vaccination status.

His plan was to defend his Australian Open title but at the nineteenth hour, he was denied entry into Australia. His visa was canceled on arrival and he was forced to take legal action in order to stay in Australia. After a 10-day long tussle with the Victorian government and judiciary, Djokovic was told to leave Australia which meant that he wasn’t able to defend his Australian Open title.

The same thing happened later at the Golden Swing where Djokovic was denied entry into the USA which meant that he wasn’t allowed to compete at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters. Djokovic is finally back on tour regularly for the clay season and with decent outings at Belgrade, Madrid, and Rome, he has registered his 1000th win.

Everyone across the globe is congratulating Djokovic for achieving this incredible feat. Even the social media handles of the Australian Open lauded the Serb for winning his 1000th match. But the social media posts were a subject of a lot of criticism as fans blamed the tournament for treating their 9-time champion badly. Many said that it is because of the Australian Open that Djokovic had to wait this long for his 1000th win.
