“Alcaraz over Djokovic,” Renowned journalist valiantly picks Carlos Alcaraz to win the Australian Open over 9-time champion Novak Djokovic

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic

Renowned journalist Ben Rothenberg has recently picked US Open champion, Carlos Alcaraz, to win the Australian Open if it were to be held today over 9-time champion Novak Djokovic. Speaking during the Match Point podcast on Tennis Majors, Alcaraz made a baffling statement and chose Alcaraz over Djokovic to win in Melbourne.

Rothenberg and Djokovic don’t have a good history with the tennis journalist questioning Djokovic on multiple occasions for his decisions throughout his career. On the podcast, when hypothetically questioned who among Alcaraz and Djokovic would have a better shot at winning the Australian Open if it was held in the coming days, Rothenberg chose Alcaraz.

He reasoned that Djokovic doesn’t have enough match preparation to go all the way at Melbourne. “If that would be the case, at this point, I would actually pick Alcaraz over Djokovic, I think, because I just don’t think Djokovic has the match prep,” Ben Rothenberg said during the Match Point podcast on Tennis Majors.

The journalist further said that everyone saw how slow Djokovic was to come back in the clay season this year when he didn’t play Indian wells and Miami. This is the sole reason why Rothenberg believes that Alcaraz may win the Australian Open over Djokovic if it were held in the coming weeks.

“I saw how slow he was to come back in the clay season this year when he didn’t play Indian wells and Miami. He had a very slow start with the clay and so we’ll see. I think he’s gonna play some European tournaments this fall. I’d imagine he will get some matches. But in this imaginary scenario, where it’s like the next big tournament, I don’t think he has that time to get the confidence back,” he said.
